Photoshop has many tools. I use the standard ones for most tasks. However, every now and then you need a plugin for an advanced feature. These _extensions_ are plug-ins or add-ons. Extensions enable you to perform a lot of things with your tools, so I also include them in the book.

# WHY PAINT AS WELL AS DESIGN?

One reason is that I want the book to be a single source of information about Photoshop. Another reason is that I teach and test on the actual computer tools, whereas a lot of books use a paint program that doesn’t require one to lay out an image.

I find the many books about Photoshop’s basic tools very easy to read, but very confusing if you need to find information about more specialized features. For example, a lot of Photoshop books talk about filters. However, after a while, I start wondering why the author is writing about it instead of about the features they’re actually using.

I’m the kind of person who likes to show images that I’ve created because I feel that showing works allows you to see what the author’s opinions are

Given a choice, I’m more likely to take the manual, the $7.99, the 30-day money-back return, or the three-month lease at OfficeMax or Sears.

When a library is trying to attract attention, much of what they do is about marketing – frequently with long-term strategies that look ahead a couple of decades. But when I go to one of those portals with my SLR and my memory card, there’s little they can do to make me choose them over the library.

Over at the WordPress Project, they’re getting paid to make things better. Over at Canonical’s Launchpad they’re getting paid to make things faster and better. Over at the Japanese construction company Shimizu they’re getting paid to make things better. And, when you join the other 5+ million of us that use them, we’re not getting paid to use these tools and services.

We’re not paying the bills, which means that the companies that make them are getting the money.

There’s a sound economic incentive to make things better. And, since the marginal cost of getting better is pretty low – certainly lower than the payment that we’re making (or not making) to them – it’s hard to see why they aren’t more enthusiastic about improving the things they make.

Information, knowledge and technology are not all the same thing. Sometimes I think that the people who make them forget that, because they make the money.

In a program, I am trying to fill an array of doubles called plistData. The array must have an initial size of n + k + 15, where n is the number of objects in the plist file. The array must then be filled with the values of the dictionary. This is the code I have so far:

Where i is used to keep track of which object of the plistData array is being processed.
What I expect is that each object in the array plistData gets the value of the corresponding object in the dictionary plist. But what happens is that the first object gets the value of all the entries in the dictionary, and then the last object gets the value of all the entries in the dictionary.
What am I doing wrong?

You are first setting plistData[0] with all the values and then incrementing i which means you are skipping the 2nd element.

Getting to Know the Interface

Photoshop’s user interface is made up of the toolbar, which appears in the upper-left corner, and the workspace, which contains the layer thumbnail panel and the page-scale previewer.

The taskbar, which displays many of Photoshop’s features, is hidden in the upper-left corner, and the marquee tool is found in the toolbox toolbar, as shown in Figure 17-3.

What Is Photoshop Elements?

When I say most features, I mean most of the features you might need to edit and modify your images, such as adding filters, re-sizing images, organizing them in folders, rotating, skewing, flipping, recoloring, adding a border, erasing objects, adding text or special effects.

By comparison, Elements is also simpler than the full version of Photoshop to understand and use. Some basic, but common tasks, such as cropping, straightening, erasing, rotating, skewing, and recoloring are done from one screen.

It’s also a fully featured image editor without all the more complex and advanced functions you’d find in Photoshop.

Start Off with Its Basic Filters

Before you start editing images in Photoshop Elements, you need to learn the basics of how to use the filters. Photoshop Elements comes with many useful filters to quickly add a single filter to a photo.

Unlike the professional version, the filters in Elements don’t allow editing once the filter is applied. The effect of the filter is immediate, but you can’t edit it. If you want to apply multiple filters, you need to use the special blend filter (vivid light) or apply multiple filters, if you want to edit the values and settings.

We’ll look at the most common filters in Elements. Some of these filters are exclusive to Elements and only work on photos. You’ll learn about some of the more complex features in Photoshop later.

Edge Tone

Add an edge effect to photos in Elements.

The Edge Tone filter is a two-step process to add an edge effect to an image. The first step adds a colored tint to the edges of the image and the second step removes some colors from the areas of the photo that were tinted the first step.

In the first step, the Edge Tone filter creates a gradient from a selected color and applies it to the edges of the photo. Then in the second step, you can control the amount of the color that is removed from the photo.

The Edge Tone effect works best for relatively simple shapes with straight edges. It’s useful when you need to make the shape stand out. If you have a complex object, and you want to change the shape of it, you can apply multiple filters in layers.

The US Marine Corps will become the first military service to opt for a version of the next generation of fighter jet that features an air-launched “supersonic strike” weapon.

The service has ordered a total of 100 Lockheed Martin F-35B Lightning II jets to maintain its fleet after testing found the aircraft to be more “valuable” in combat, the US official said on Tuesday.

Defence News reported in January that the service was contemplating a dramatic shift in its weapons strategy and choosing to launch air-to-surface missiles instead of bombs in combat.

Marine General John Murray, chief of naval operations, told an audience on Tuesday at the conference Future Carrier 2016 in Orlando, Florida that the test results indicated the F-35B provided superior performance to the bomb and was “more valuable” to the Marines.

“That is exactly why we are placing 100 of these tactical versions into our inventory,” he said.

“Not only do we have more opportunity, we have more choice.”

The Marine Corps began its transition to the F-35B in 2015 after decades of largely depending on bombs to destroy enemy targets.

In the conflict with ISIS in northern Syria, ground troops have faced a barrage of artillery shells and air attacks, but F-35Bs have the ability to attack small groups of insurgents at ranges of up to 50 miles.

The first of the aircraft was delivered last year, and the Marines are already conducting the “Go/No-Go” testing for the new weapon.

The official said that five of the F-35Bs are currently being test flown on USS George Washington, one of the warships carrying out the so-called Operation Inherent Resolve.

The US official also confirmed that the jets were capable of dropping a mix of anti-armor and anti-sensor munitions, the latter being a new capability only added on to the fifth-generation aircraft.
