I’m afraid that you’ll need to prove an existence. Probabilistic inference is a very young field, perhaps a few decades young, so if you want to know about current research you’ll have to look for papers published in the last 2-3 years.
Still, there are quite a few excellent Bayesian network papers in the last few years. I suggest searching in Google Scholar for the phrase “Bayesian network learning”. You’ll find a lot of research groups working on new algorithms for learning Bayesian networks.

I’m sure she doesn’t mean to sound so threatening; she’s just upset that someone who is supposed to teach students how to use the program can’t do it because they don’t use the program. The truth is that the Wacom product works just fine with the program, whether you use an expensive Wacom tablet that costs $300 or a ten-dollar tablet from Wacom. These handheld devices allow you to work in the program without having to constantly direct your attention to the screen on your computer.
What you have to understand is that even though it doesn’t seem like it at first glance, the Wacom pen is a stylus that you use to operate the mouse pointer in the same way that you use it in a drawing program. That’s all it does — it moves the cursor. So if you’re trying to draw in Photoshop, nothing more than that is happening, but you’re unaware of it because you never had any experience with a stylus or with drawing in a program that uses one. Once you get used to the feel of the Wacom pen, drawing gets much more fluid, more natural, and more realistic.
Anyway, the point of all this is that it’s okay to use the pen to draw, and you can use your tablet instead of your mouse when working in Photoshop. After all, the program is still fairly new, and you don’t want to break down the program because you don’t know how to use your tablet. So just pretend that the pen is your mouse for now, and you’ll be fine.

Caveats of using C# 2.0 generators with LINQ-to-SQL
I’m new to LINQ-to-SQL and am now trying to get a deeper understanding of what it is capable of.
However, what I am finding is that L2S is only a partial solution for me, despite being able to generate a finite list of entities quite well. I already have generated my classes and their relations and would like to avoid using a loop to generate them since doing this generates an inordinate amount of code compared to manually creating them.
Instead I have heard about generators which seem to be capable of generating all entity types (assuming I have a starting point). So my questions are:
If I generate my entities using a generator and then create an entity with each of the results, are there any issues with this approach?
If so, how do I generate them? It seems that they are only generated in appx generation mode (which I don’t have).
Also I’ve heard that L2S is only really good for simple applications and that I will likely need to look into using LINQ-to-SQL unless I have complex queries. What are the major caveats of using L2S for these types of applications?

L2S is good for a wide range of scenarios, but I’d recommend you take a look at the EF4.x-based data providers instead. Or at EF3.x, if that’s an option. I think that these are missing some of the features in L2S, but are based on.NET 3.5, which is arguably a better framework. With EF4.0, the project is actually getting new features like change tracking, code-gen, etc. that could be useful.
LINQ-to-SQL has definitely been around the block, so I think it will be around awhile. My recommendation is to leave it in the toolbox, but be sure to look at its alternatives.

L2S isn’t so much “good” as it is an adequate database-access-layer (being that it only supports the SQL types for the underlying database engine – i.e. only those that are supported by your SQL implementation).
It’ll do just fine for simple cases. But if you need anything “real” like a full-fledged ORM like Linq

It is very easy to make errors in the mathematics of Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle, since it comes from one of the most fundamental expressions of quantum physics. But when we write down an equation for this uncertainty principle, we have to be very careful about what we mean by the uncertainty.

The Great Divide
Last week I wrote about my dismay that the much-anticipated bipartisan deal on immigration legislation, which had been announced as being in the works for months, is going nowhere. I also blogged about my dislike of the word “compromise.”
Right now, the deal may be on the brink of falling apart because of the refusal of one of the Republican senators–a party leader–to agree to some concessions that were offered by the president to the two sides. The GOP senators are reportedly doing so because they want to show that their party will not back down on its stance on the matter at all costs.
The deal that is being talked about appears to be the following:
The president would, as he has previously stated, accept an enforcement-only approach–meaning, no legalization of illegal immigrants.
Republicans in the Senate would agree to a path to citizenship for those here illegally who qualify–and meet certain conditions, such as paying a penalty for past-due taxes and a fine for breaking the law in the past.
Democrats in the Senate would agree to an enforcement-only approach–meaning, no legalization for the entire illegal immigrant population.
If all this sounds like a good deal, it is, but it is a far cry from the broad immigration reform that many people want. What many Americans think they want is, and what many progressives want is, a set of policies for the rule of law. The president has offered that, and the Senate leadership has said that they support it. It’s just that we have to amend the Constitution and add a few other pieces to get there.
Unfortunately, the GOP leadership has no plans of going along with that. The GOP’s position is: That’s the only plan that will work, we won’t back down on it at all costs, and it’s even a good plan. The big lesson, that I’ve seen repeatedly, is that the best strategy for Republicans is to be arrogant, to dig in their heels and stick to their positions. The Republican leadership, by contrast, are prodded by the Latino/American activist community to consider some kind of a “compromise.” The activists want the GOP to be the ones to give away their principles. They want to see the Republicans cave, and play a valuable role in defusing the issue.
I don’t buy that.
