LAHORE, Jan 23 — Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan has challenged Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in a televised debate in the run-up to the general election.

The announcement came hours after Khan said Sharif should step aside from his position as prime minister, following his ruling party’s loss in Punjab and three other provinces earlier this week.

“Nawaz Sharif, announce whatever you want to announce. Let’s have a debate,” Khan said during an election rally in Lahore.

Sharif responded later saying his party will not accept the challenge to a debate for now.

“We want to tell him that we are not interested in debates or debates on TV or radio… debate on a court of law.”

The prime minister has also noted that his party’s loss in the recent election was due to the inability to handle terrorism in the country.

“If a politician leads the way in handling terrorism in the country, everything will be all right,” he added.

Khan, on the other hand, blamed others for terrorism in the country.

“It is because we were tolerant and gave peace a chance,” the PTI chief said.

“We will not tolerate anyone or any group who uses terrorism,” he added.

Khan has challenged Nawaz Sharif, who was going to hold a meeting with the Election Commission, to respond to his challenge publicly for a debate.

He also sought to know which one of them would take the first step for the resolution of the disagreements between them.
