The Film

As The Hollywood Reporter’s Todd McCarthy pointed out in his review of the first trailer, Solo had a big load to carry: It was the first Star Wars film to feature an all-new cast of characters. It also featured no original trilogy characters and almost no substantial prequels. It’s just an entirely new story.

But will that work?

Released today, the film is directed by Ron Howard, who also directed 2010’s The Da Vinci Code. The film features an all-new cast of characters with an all-new story that incorporates many familiar elements from the franchise. They include Han Solo (Daniel Craig), Poe Dameron (Oscar Issac) and Chewbacca (Joonas Suotamo). Also make an appearance, Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), the cold-hearted, scheming character from George Lucas’s original “Star Wars.”

The trailer gives away a fair amount of the plot of the film: Solo follows Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Han Solo as they search for the legendary second Death Star that will destroy the main Death Star and save the day. Of course, Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) are the villains of the piece.
