) and, more recently, to the account of deep-freeze painters in the Eastern Bloc. Napkin folding has been explored as a promising next-generation electrical floor plane: the work’s creator, Nico Andries, an industrial designer and electrical engineer at the University of Cambridge, is developing a method to fold anodised aluminium ‘thin-film’ fabric across a copper foil, creating an electrical panel with no visible seams. (Plates would work well, too, he notes.)

Tall buildings have long been good places to hide electromagnetism-spouting switches, and The Emergency stopped them getting into bathrooms by making it a crime to run wires there. ‘That meant that the bathroom became a perfectly quiet place to do all sorts of things. This led to the development of all sorts of interesting things: devices you would never see in a normal house, like underwater cameras and spy detectors,’ says Oerlemans. ‘Now there is a real movement towards this kind of creativity, which I think is absolutely positive.’

A new law called the Energy Savings Opportunity Act (ESOA) will enable builders to track such ‘occupancy’ data in their construction and renovation work, a big improvement on the previous method of relying on inspectors and estimators. A handful of Australian developers are already using sensors to track occupancy, even down to a room-by-room level. The data can be used to help architects, builders, developers, landlords and insurers manage energy use by analysing space use, daylight and ventilation patterns, and energy use.

The research suggests that the majority of energy losses are happening in unoccupied or poorly ventilated areas of the building. Oerlemans’ team’s studies have shown that energy losses were often caused by air leakage through doors and windows. For example, in a 300-square-metre office, the average annual energy losses were 0.14 per cent in a well-insulated building, compared with 0.8 per cent in a poorly insulated one. The Energy-Efficiency Rating System (EERS) is a system created in the US, which not only assesses buildings according to their energy efficiency and environmental rating, but also where the occupants are. Buildings are rated from A to F, with A being the most efficient and F being the least efficient. Buildings receive a letter grade (eg E) based on their energy efficiency, with A being the best. Buildings are also assigned an occupancy rating, ranging from P for best (the place people would like to be), to D for worst (the place people would be happy to escape). Thus the EERS ratings are A-F-P-D.

The findings about building performance are part of a research project that will culminate in a blueprint for the Energy Efficiency Rating Scheme (EERS) – a scorecard for Australian buildings and suburbs that is expected
