Toshiba said last October that it had selected a consortium of Hitachi and Hitachi subsidiary Hitachi Nuclear Energy to assist in its purchase of Westinghouse, maker of nuclear reactors, which Toshiba is to acquire by the end of the year.

Westinghouse, which also supplies uranium enrichment, is a GE subsidiary.

Toshiba’s $9.3bn (£5.3bn) acquisition of Westinghouse has been at the centre of a long-running dispute over US anti-corruption rules, making it the first company to be cleared to take over a large American nuclear producer by the National Foreign Trade Council.

Toshiba, once the world’s biggest maker of nuclear power plants, went bust in 2015 after it failed to meet its financial obligations and was hit with a huge fine by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The company, which is 81% owned by the Japanese government, later emerged from bankruptcy in 2017 as a technology company with a wide range of other interests, including global shipping and automotive businesses.// -*- C++ -*-
