An image from your digital camera can be edited in Photoshop using the same techniques as a scanned image. Digital cameras still produce scans. These scans are not usually the same size as a desktop scanner, but if you convert them to CMYK (see the sidebar in this chapter, ‘Fixing a colour scan that’s too light or dark’), Photoshop can open and manipulate them as well as scan images. Power to the pixels: Understanding image resolution

The easiest way to describe image resolution is to talk about the number of pixels that comprise a line of text. The reason why it’s easy to understand is that the pixel is the fundamental building block of the digital image. It’s how the pixels are arranged that determines whether a computer displays a picture or a text. Therefore, the resolution of your monitor and the resolution of a printed photograph are exactly the same, despite one being much larger than the other.

Image resolution is measured in pixels. The higher the pixel number, the better the resolution and the larger the image will appear on screen or on a page.

Pixels are measured in dots and inches, and the better the resolution, the smaller the dots in the image or text, and the further apart the dots appear. I can’t give a definitive measurement for how close together the pixels in the print version of this book are, but the dots are less than 0.1 mm, and in fact the text appears to be about half a millimetre in size.

Pixel dimensions vary by printer. However, using a resolution that’s far above the printer’s capabilities is more wasteful than using a lower resolution that matches the printer’s capabilities.

The actual number of dots in an image or text is affected by the type of information being displayed. For example, a magazine, newspaper, website, billboard, or other dynamic display contains an image that is more refined than text. Therefore, a website image or a billboard image is generally higher resolution than the text.

Lightroom and Photoshop layers use pixels as the fundamental unit of measurement. For example, when you resize an image to a smaller dimension, the pixels are modified, which actually means that more pixels are added to the image.

I have a dataframe of zip codes and their indexes in two columns. Example of the dataframe:

How can I add a new column in the dataframe, based on the zipcode. I want to have a new column that says 0 for all of the indexes until the next zipcode and 1 for all of the indexes that follow it. For example, for the first row, I want it to be all 0s, but then I want it to be all 1s for the second row, and then all 0s in the third row. I will use this to create an NDVI that divides all the 0s by the 1s in order to control for land use. My data will be called US_2012_05_2012, and it will be based on the year, which is the variable “Date” (in this example, it would be 2012). The column that I want to add is called “NDVI” and I want it to end up with a column of 5,000,000 values.
