Let’s start by talking about the creation of the anime. Tomino himself wasn’t actually involved with the game. Nor was he even the creator of Neon Genesis Evangelion and the Takami brothers were not involved at all with this project. Tokuma Shoten once again had their hand in publishing it, they were the original publisher for the games.

As we may have mentioned before, Neon Genesis Evangelion is based on the manga of the same title, which was created by Kazuo Koike and illustrated by Takashi Yamazaki. The series was written by Kazumasa Hirai, Noriyuki Agumasu and Yoshiyuki Sadamoto. The script of the Evangelion movies were also by Sadamoto.

Based on the manga, there are 24 episodes, with 12 of them being movies. Evangelion: Death & Rebirth is a two-part prologue that appears first on the Gaiden disc, it marks the end of the manga series.

The packaging and box art allude to the Gaiden disc, the disc holder. The disc is sealed and has no other box. The box has a circular placard with the Evangelion logo on it and the words, “The end of the Gaiden Era”, which is fitting because we are nearing the end of the theatrical run. The box art shows Shinji in his final form, the Gipsy Armed.

The game overall was actually released by Bandai as a second limited edition. The first limited edition came with a DVD with the original Neon Genesis Evangelion: Gaiden anime itself along with a BD-ROM copy of the Death & Rebirth film. The game was released on November 20, 1998 as a first-print limited edition. The game itself was also available in the West as part of the Eva: Death and Rebirth set in the form of a Digitally Imported (Direct to console) edition. The A-sides were dubbed into English.

I have a small confession to make. I love doujinshi, but within the doujin communities they are often frowned upon. Not only does it seem like doujinshi is a cheap way to tell stories that sometimes make reading material pay for itself, but for a lot of other people it’s just a mysterious idea too far to explore and they just want to save up their allowance.

*The number of different situations the game allows you to deal with is limitless. However, it will still be difficult if you have the two dialogue options only (tell him what he wants to hear and tell him the truth), or only have the three dialogue options (tell him what he wants to hear, tell him the truth, and evade).
